What is the function of GUO (過) in Chinese?

Guò過 accounts one’s experiences. In other words, it describes an event that happened at least once in the past and discontinued to the present. For example,

            我去過中國。

            wǒ qù-guò zhōngguó

            I     go-GUO  China

           ‘I’ve been to China.’
