介副词不同于一般的介系词,多了副词性的功能,因此可以移动,但是只能放在名词前,不能放在名词后,原因是名词有无限延展的可能,如果名词太长,介副词放在后面就会妨碍沟通,例如:

*I turned [the small radio that was on the round table near the large window in the beautiful living room in his new house] on. 

若是长长一串名词后才加上介副词on,可能早就忘了动词是什么了,容易造成理解上的困扰。另一方面,语义比重也是考量因素,名词通常承载较新、较重要的讯息(new information),所以放在最后turn on the radio。同理,on放在代名词后turn it on,也可能有两个原因:其一,与介系词的用法作一区隔;其二,语义上介副词比代名词的讯息重要,是新的讯息,倾向放在后面。
