当主控这的重要性降低,或不需出现,因而选择由“受影响者”的角度来描述事件的原因,有以下几种可能性(Givon 1993):

1. 主控者不详

He was killed in an accident. →只晓得发生了这件事,但不晓得确切的主控者是谁。

2. 主控者已经提过

The students went into the stadium and soon the whole place was packed. → 学者进入后球场才挤满了人,学生就是主导者,不需再提一次。

3. 主控者不需言明

The bus was parked in the garage. → 如果没有特殊情况,公车必然是在驾驶员的操控下停妥的。

4. 主控者相当于所有“路人甲乙丙丁”

It is known that the Earth is the third planet from the Sun. → It这个虚主词,代表that后面的内容。此句在阐述一个事实,因此know的主控者可以说是所有人。

5. 主控者刻意被隐藏,以推卸责任

The window is broken. → 事情的真相可能是“窗户被小明打破了”,但这个句子只做出部分描述,另外一部分的咨询则被隐藏起来了。
