It should also be noted that the bèi structure is often used to narrate an unpleasant event:
tā bèi bà bà mà le yī dùn 。
He was told off by his father.
tā ràng lǎo shī pī píng dé kū le qǐ lái 。
She was criticized so much by the teacher that she began to cry.
huā píng jiào xiǎo wú （gěi ）dǎ pò le 。
The vase was broken by Xiao Wu.
diàn shì jī bèi dì dì nòng huài le 。
The TV set was damaged by (my) younger brother.
chuāng hù dōu bèi dǎ kāi le 。
All the windows had been opened.
qián bèi cáng zài chōu tì lǐ 。
The money was kept in a drawer.
xiǎo māo bèi bà bà bào zài huái lǐ 。
Father held the kitten in his arms. (lit. The kitten was held in his arms by Father.)
lǐ wù bèi zhuāng jìn yī gè piāo liàng de hé zǐ lǐ qù le 。
The gift was put into an attractive box.
láng bèi gǎn chū cūn zǐ qù 。
The wolf was driven away from the village.
tā bèi bà bà pī píng le jǐ cì 。
She was reprimanded several times by her father.
fàn rén bèi guān le sān nián 。
The criminal was imprisoned for three years.
