昨天下雨,运动会却照常举行。

Zuó tiān xià yǔ ,yùn dòng huì què zhào cháng jǔ háng 。

It rained yesterday but the sports meeting went ahead as planned.

(却 què ‘on the other hand’ is a conjunctive.)

Quite often a conjunction (in the first clause) and a conjunctive (in the second clause) work together for the linkage:

雨虽然很大,他却来了。

Yǔ suī rán hěn dà ,tā què lái le 。

He came in spite of the heavy rain./Although the rain was heavy, he did (however) come.

(虽然 suī rán ‘(al)though’ is a conjunction and 却 què ‘on the contrary’ is a conjunctive.)
