啊a is the most versatile interjection of all. With different tones, it may express different emotions:

(1) 啊ā (first tone) surprise:

啊,是你呀!

ā, shì nǐ ya !

Oh, it’s you!

ā,tài yáng chū lái lā!

Oh look, the sun has come out!

(2) 啊á (second tone) asking for further confirmation:

啊,你说什么?

á,nǐ shuō shí me ?

What was it you said?

á,nǐ bú tóng yì ma ?

Did you say you didn’t agree?

(3) 啊ǎ (third tone) doubt and astonishment:

啊,这是怎么回事呢?

ǎ,zhè shì zěn me huí shì ne?

Oh, what is all this (about)?

ǎ,tā shàng nǎ ér qù le ne?

Where could he have gone?

(4) 啊 à (fourth tone) agreement or admiration:

啊,我去吧!

à,wǒ qù ba!

All right, I’ll go!

à,duō jīng cǎi de bǐ sài ya!

Ah, what an amazing game!
