In the sentence 他昨天來了 (tā zuó tiān lái le/ He came yesterday), the "Verb-LE (了)" structure is employed in order to assert a realized event. On the other hand,  the "Modifier-DE (的)" structure in 他昨天來的 (tā zuó tiān lái de/ He came yesterday) presumes the action to be true and asserts the time in which the action occurred.
