in 的語意為 in a boundary,是「包含於某範疇之內」的概念,on 則是 on a surface,意即「在接觸表面上」。當我們把樹當作一個涵蓋範疇,就可說 a bird in the tree;若樹當作是一個接觸表面,則可說 a bird on the tree。
