這兩者最大的不同在於，介系詞是「介詞」，介副詞是「副詞」。介詞是「介於」名詞之間，後面一定要有名詞；副詞是修飾動詞，語意與動詞相關，但位置可以變動。所以介系詞一定要跟著名詞走，介副詞卻可以自由移動。
介系詞後面要接名詞：He turned to his boss for help.
介副詞可以自由行動：
I turned on the computer. → 放在名詞前面，強調名詞訊息
I turned it on. → 放在代名詞後面，強調 on
The computer is on. → 單獨出現，表結果狀態
介副詞表達既像副詞又像介系詞的兩種語意：既標記動詞相關的副詞語意，也標記名詞相關的空間狀態。但是因為介副詞是副詞，所以可以單獨出現，表達結果狀態。
介系詞不能脫離名詞單獨存在：I put the book on the table. → 不能說 The book is on
介副詞可以單獨出現，表達結果狀態：I turned on the microphone. → The microphone is on.
