從溝通的角度出發,介副詞不同於一般的介系詞,多了副詞性的功能,因此可以移動,但是只能放在名詞前,不能放在名詞後,原因是名詞有無限延展的可能,如果名詞太長,介副詞放在後面就會妨礙溝通。

舉例來說:

I turned [the small radio that was on the round table near the large window in the beautiful living room in his new house] on.

若是長長一串名詞後才加上介副詞 on,可能早就忘了動詞是什麼了,容易造成理解上的困擾。另一方面,語意比重也是考量因素,名詞通常承載較新、較重要的訊息,所以放在最後turn on the radio 。

同理,on 放在代名詞後 turn it on,也可能有兩個原因:其一,與介系詞的用法作一區隔;其二,語意上介副詞比代名詞的訊息重要,是新的訊息,傾向放在後面。
