當一個名詞沒有單、複數及冠詞的標記，這個名詞的溝通功能也從「標準、典型」語意轉變為其他較特殊的語意。go home 和 go to school 中的名詞 home / school 不再是指實體可數的建築物（the physical, countable entity） 而是指其「社會功能」（the function of home / school）：
She goes to school everyday. → 上學讀書受教育，而不是指去學校這個地點
She went to the school yesterday. → 到學校這個地點做別的事
