The first sentence indicates a manner of the action, while the second one indicates the result.
The difference between a manner and a result complement is that the latter one usually incorporated with the sentence particle LE (了) whereas the former one is not. The reason is that LE (了) is the sentence particle used to indicate a change of situation or an actualization of the action which is just denoted by the result. However, sentences without LE (了) are statements of a present fact and focus on manner rather than result.
