當我們要引用別人的話時，總是有兩種選擇：直接引述和間接引述。
直接引述的原則就是「原音重現」，通常放在句首作為重點，並用雙引號“ ”來區隔兩個場景，時空人物都各自獨立：
→ “Who has questions?” the speaker asked, and several hands raised up high in the air.
→ When the speaker asked: “Who has questions?”, several hands raised up high in the air.
「間接引述」是融入句子的一部分，與主要子句緊密結合。因為已經過改寫，不再是「原汁原味」，不需要「引號」來標記，但要遵照主從分明的原則，須加上附屬標記：
→ When the speaker asked who had questions, several hands raised up high in the air.
→ The quotation says that living in another country means growing another self, and it takes time for that other self to become familiar.
