及物 / 不及物動詞(Transitive / Intransitive verbs) 表達的是:動作是否及於另一物?

如前所述,事件是否「及於另一物」是一種基本的區別。及物是指動作「及於」某物,動 詞後需要加上一個動作的接受者。不及物動詞只要有主詞就夠了,不需要再加上受詞。外 在動作和內在的心智活動都有及物和不及物的分別:

動作動詞:不及物: I jumped / ran.


                  及物: I hit / beat / kicked John.

靜態動詞:不及物:I am happy / envious / interested.

                  及物:I like / envy / know / interest him.

及物事件牽涉到兩個以上的參與者,以「主控者」的觀點來描述事件,就是所謂的「主動句」 (I hit him.);以「被害者」的觀點來描述,就是「被動句」(He was hit.)。
